How to perform Hajj, day by day
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Take your rites from me” (Sahih Muslim 1297). This is a summary of the rites of Hajj as described in the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) on the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj, and in the rulings of recognised scholars.
Pillars of Hajj
- Ihram
- Standing at Arafah
- Tawaf al-Ifadah
- Sa‘i
Source: Sheikh Ibn Baz, “The pillars and obligations of Hajj”
Obligations of Hajj
- Entering ihram from the miqat
- Staying at Arafah until sunset
- Spending the night at Muzdalifah
- Spending the nights of Tashreeq in Mina
- Stoning the jamarat
- Shaving or shortening the hair
- The farewell tawaf
Whoever omits an obligation must offer a sacrifice (dam), unless excused by a valid reason.
Types of Hajj
- Tamattu‘: Umrah in the months of Hajj, then Hajj in the same year. A sacrificial animal (hady) is due.
- Qiran: Umrah and Hajj in a single ihram. A hady is due.
- Ifrad: Hajj alone. No hady is due.
8Dhul Hijjah
Day of Tarwiyah: ihram and going to Mina
- The pilgrim doing tamattu‘ enters ihram for Hajj in the forenoon from where he is staying in Makkah, saying “Labbayka Allahumma hajjan” (Here I am, O Allah, for Hajj), and adds the condition if he fears being prevented.
- He goes to Mina and prays Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr there, shortening the four-rak‘ah prayers without combining them.
9Dhul Hijjah
Day of Arafah: the greatest pillar
- After sunrise he goes to Arafah and prays Dhuhr and Asr combined and shortened at the time of Dhuhr.
- He devotes himself to dhikr and supplication facing the qiblah until sunset, making sure he is within the boundaries of Arafah.
- After sunset he leaves for Muzdalifah.
Night
10Muzdalifah
10Muzdalifah
The night at Muzdalifah
- He prays Maghrib and Isha combined, shortening Isha, with one adhan and two iqamahs, and spends the night there.
- He prays Fajr early, then remembers Allah and supplicates until the sky is very bright, and leaves for Mina before sunrise.
- The weak, women and those with them may leave in the last part of the night.
10Day of Sacrifice
Eid day: stoning, sacrifice, shaving and tawaf
- He stones Jamrat al-‘Aqabah with seven pebbles, saying “Allahu akbar” with each one.
- He slaughters his hady if doing tamattu‘ or qiran.
- He shaves or shortens his hair (a woman trims a fingertip's length). With this the first release from ihram is reached.
- He performs Tawaf al-Ifadah and sa‘i, after which everything becomes permissible again.
- If he does some of these rites before others, there is no harm, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “Do it, and there is no harm” (al-Bukhari 83, Muslim 1306).
11–12Tashreeq
Nights in Mina and stoning the three jamarat
- Each day after midday he stones the small jamrah, then the middle one, then Jamrat al-‘Aqabah, seven pebbles each.
- He stops to supplicate after the small and middle jamarat, but not after al-‘Aqabah.
- Whoever hastens leaves Mina before sunset on the 12th: “Whoever hastens on in two days, there is no sin upon him” (al-Baqarah 2:203, meaning).
13Dhul Hijjah
The third day for those who stay, then the farewell tawaf
- Whoever chooses to remain in Mina at sunset on the 12th spends the night and stones all three jamarat after midday on the 13th.
- The farewell tawaf is the last thing the pilgrim does before travelling. It is waived for women who are menstruating or have postnatal bleeding (al-Bukhari 1755, Muslim 1328).
How do you register for Hajj?
Registration is only through the Nusuk platform or the officially approved authority in your country. Hajj packages are not booked on regular booking sites. Beware of unofficial offers.
Official Nusuk platformFor women on Hajj
- A menstruating woman performs all the rites except tawaf until she is pure.
- She may leave Muzdalifah in the last part of the night.
- The farewell tawaf is waived for her if she is menstruating or has postnatal bleeding.
Stays before and after Hajj
Many pilgrims spend days in Madinah or Makkah before or after the rites.
